Dog on a Bike Ride

Many people love to take their dogs everywhere they go. You see them in shopping malls and grocery stores, doctors offices and even the library. You see people with their dogs on leashes, perhaps in harnesses, or people with smaller dogs in designer dog totes that could easily be mistaken for a purse or messenger bag. It seems like everywhere you go, if you look long and hard enough, you will see someone with his or her beloved dog. And why not? Most dogs love to get out and about, and of course they love the companionship of being with their owner rather than being left at home alone to chew up a pair of perfectly good shoes.

But some dog lovers may be at a loss when it comes to certain activities. There are just some places that you cannot take a dog, not matter how well behaved or well socialized the dog is. Well, thanks to the ingenuity of dog accessory manufacturers, bike riding is no longer on the list of forbidden activities for you and your dog. While it may seem impossible to ride a bike with your canine friend, really all you need is a dog bike carrier or a dog bike trailer. Your dog will love getting out and about with you for a cycling adventure to enjoy all of the different sights and sounds the great outdoors has to offer!

Using is a dog bike carrier is a safe and comfortable way to allow your dog to enjoy a bike ride with you. A dog bike carrier typically attaches to the front of the handlebars of your bike. This type of dog bike carrier is obviously meant for dogs in the small to medium size range. You may find dog bike carriers in a variety of styles and colors to suit your needs and personality (and the personality of your pooch!). Most of the dog bike carriers on the market today are easy to install and require no additional hardware. These types of carriers can come with a variety of features such as built in rain ponchos to protect your beloved dog in the event of an unexpected rain shower, added storage pockets to hold your dog’s toys or snacks (or perhaps your wallet or sunglasses!), safety straps or harnesses to keep your dog comfortable and secure on your bike rides, or even a removable sun canopy to protect your pup from overheating.

If your dog is too large for a dog bike carrier, consider a dog bike trailer. A dog bike trailer can be suitable for dogs weighing up to one hundred ten pounds. This type of trailer is similar to a dog carrier on wheels and it attaches behind your bike with a universal bike hitch. The dog bike trailers are generally easy to install as well and can be found at many online retailers. These trailers also come with a variety of features such as storage pockets for your gear and washable cushions for your dog’s comfort on long bike rides.

Designer Dogs

Designer dogs are all the rage in the media lately. What is a designer dog exactly? Designer dogs are hybrid dogs. The term “designer dogs” was created by the media likely to showcase how breeders were essentially designing new dogs by crossing one purebred dog with another purebred dog of a different breed. Many of the first designer, or hybrid, dogs were created by breeding purebreds like Yorkshire Terriers or Labrador Retrievers with purebred Poodles to create hybrid dogs that have Poodles hypoallergenic coat that is so desirable to many dog owners.

Designer dogs are also given designer names! They are described with names that are portmanteau words, or blends of two or more words to create a new word. A Yorkshire Terrier and a Poodle make a Yorkie-Poo, while the Labrador Retriever and Poodle make a Labradoodle. There is also my personal favorite—the cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund (commonly known as a Weiner Dog) is affectionately named a Chiweenie. Some other popular designer creations are the cockapoo, which is a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix, the Buggs, which is a Boston Terrier/Pug mix, and the Beagle plus a Pug makes an adorable little Puggle.

Designer, or hybrid, dogs are generally thought to be less predisposed to the genetic problems many purebred dogs are subject to. While there is still a chance of genetic problems in hybrid dogs because they are crossing two first generation purebred dogs, the risks are lessened because the gene pools are mixed. One other cautionary tidbit is that designer dogs were originally bred to breed the best qualities of two purebred dogs into one breed, like crossing a Poodle with a Labrador to get a puppy that has the disposition of a Labrador with the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle; however, these traits are not guaranteed. Instead of getting the most desirable characteristics in the puppies, you may get all of the less desirable traits.

The American Canine Hybrid Club is the top registry for hybrid dogs. Since designer dogs are of purebred ancestry on both sides, as opposed to a mutt that is of uncertain ancestry, the ACHC was created to track all of the different types of hybrids created and to help possibly set standards for each hybrid. If each parent of the designer hybrid dog is a registered and recognized purebred, the ACHC will recognize the hybrid offspring.

If you are trying to decide if a designer hybrid dog is right for you, it is important to keep in mind that there are no guarantees when crossing breeds. You may get a Puggle that appears to be more Pug than Beagle or a Labradoodle that sheds. Another thing to be aware of is that since the media has dubbed these hybrids as designer dogs, many of them are now coming with designer price tags… often times the mixed offspring are being sold for more than their purebred counterparts. Weather you have a purebred dog, a designer hybrid, or just a plain ole mutt, dogs are wonderful pets and really can be man’s (and women’s) best friend.

Shopping for Your Dog

While most pet owners number one concern is that their pets are happy and healthy, dog owners have to go one step further to ensure that their pet is challenged and stimulated enough not to get bored or uncomfortable in their surroundings. Dogs are truly a “man’s best friend,” but they can be a little mischievous when left to their own devices. Luckily there are many things that a dog owner can do to ensure that their pet is both happy and stays out of trouble. While dogs do need regular stimulation of their senses, it can be a simple matter of a favorite toy or a routine walk to expel some of their unused energy.

Dogs can be mysterious creatures because, on the one side they are very independent and smart, but on the other, they want to please their masters and have companionship. This mix can create a disastrous situation if your dog is not stimulated or allowed to exercise to release built up energy. It is important to ensure that your dog does not get bored in his or her environment; this will prevent many bad behaviors from developing and make an even happier household.

One simple trick to keeping your dog entertained is by ensuring that it has a variety of pet toys, which can range anywhere from a simple tennis ball or rawhide bone to a more elaborate stuffed toy. The toy that is chosen needs to be stimulating enough to keep your dogs attention for a good amount of time. You can also use your dog’s favorite toy as a training tool to substitute for treats. This technique has been used for many decades by professional dog trainers as a way to speed training, and make the dog think they are playing a fun game.

Along with having toys for your dog to play with, they also need to have the proper collar and leash. It is important that a dog gets regular exercise to release restless energy that gets built up throughout the day. A nice long walk once or twice per day can turn a very loud and irritating dog into one that is quiet and happy. It is important for all dogs to get proper exercise and for owners to spend time with their pets; this is where walking your dog on a daily basis can be a blessing for both you and your animal.

When it comes to purchasing pet supplies such as toys and collars, there are many options available from local retailers to online websites. While the local retailer will allow you to take your purchases home immediately, the online retailer will usually have a much wider selection and can offer deeper discounts on their product. The most important thing to remember when purchasing these types of pet supplies is to purchase items that will keep your dog stimulated and happy. This can be a fun little adventure for both you and your pet. Choose a few toys your pet will enjoy and watch as he comes to life with energy and good health.
