Keeping lingerie in perfect condition can be challenging. Fabrics vary and stitching and design make intimate apparel more delicate than other clothes. Learning how to properly care for your lingerie can keep it looking new and make it last longer.
1) When to wash: Lingerie should be washed as soon after wearing as possible. Because it is worn next to the body, it is susceptible to body oils which can break down the fibers of the garments quickly. Never leave dirty lingerie stuffed in a laundry hamper with other clothes. Lingerie can pick up dirt and stains from other garments.
2) How to wash: Because lingerie is more delicate than regular apparel, it has special laundering needs. Check the labels of each garment to see whether it requires hand-washing or cold water washing.
While you can wash lingerie that has similar washing instructions together, wash each garment separately the first time. This allows any dyes that may run to rinse out of the garment without staining anything else.
Unless the garment specifically directs you to wash in cold water, use lukewarm water. Never wash lingerie in hot water as it can shrink and damage the fibers. If the lingerie can be machine-washed, use the machine’s delicate cycle to avoid wear and tear. You can purchase a lingerie bag that keeps lingerie together in the wash or simply put all delicates in a pillowcase and knot the top.
There are many detergents on the market today formulated for lingerie. These special detergents, like Woolite, have no perfumes, dyes or additives that may be harsh on delicate fabric. If handwashing, you can use a gentle dish detergent, like Ivory, if you do not have a suitable laundry detergent.
Remove lingerie from the washing machine as soon after the end of the wash as possible. If handwashing, gently wring out the garments. Lingerie should be air-dried, not machine-dried to help it keep its shape. It can be dried flat or hung to dry. To dry flat, lay a thick bath towel on a flat surface like a table or chest freezer. Lay the garment on top of the towel, smoothing out wrinkles and maintaining the shape. Starting at the bottom, roll the towel away from you like a jelly roll, gently squeezing the garment between the layers. Keep rolled for a few minutes to absorb as much water as possible, then unroll to the flat position again and allow it to dry completely. If hanging, put garments on padded hangers immediately after removing from the washing machine or hand-wringing. Lingerie can be hung outside in the breeze to dry more quickly but should not be in direct sunlight or colors can fade.
3) How to store: Intimate apparel, like chemises and teddies should be stored on padded hangers to avoid creases and wrinkles. Panties can be folded and stored in a drawer. Bras with underwires or forms should be laid gently in a drawer to avoid crushing the shape. Bras can also be hung on padded hangers in the closet.
Taking proper care of your lingerie can prove a valuable investment. Your garments will look new for a long time.
