Sleeping on a Cloud

In poems and fairy tales, the gold standard for a comfortable sleeping surface is a cloud. A cloud let’s those upon it sink into it, yet it firms up enough to support their weight and keep them from falling through. In real life, of course, clouds are only wisps of water vapor and it is completely impossible to sleep on one. Instead, the gold standard for comfort is the memory foam mattress and pillow.

Not only does memory foam feel like sleeping on a cloud, but it was actually designed to cushion astronauts as they hurtled through the clouds at high accelerations inside the early NASA rockets. Like those mythical sleeping clouds, memory foam is at once both very soft and very supportive.

Memory foam reacts to the heat of the human body and the portion of the foam that comes into contact with the heat softens, allowing the sleeper’s body to sink into the mattress as if it were a cloud. The rest of the memory foam mattress or memory foam pillow remains firmly supportive.

The yielding foam cradles the contours of the body, eliminating pressure points that can be quite uncomfortable and can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Pressure points can also lead to painful joints when the sleeper wakes up in the morning. By helping to distribute body weight over its entire surface, the memory foam mattress removes these irritations.

The firm support of the memory foam mattress allows comfort and will also work to help maintain good spinal alignment. The addition of a memory foam pillow helps to provide proper alignment as well. Memory foam pillows help reduce those painful stiff necks that one might wake up with on a regular mattress with a regular pillow.

As a material that was originally designed for the space program, memory foam was quite expensive when it was first introduced. Limited production capacity in its early days was a large part of that premium pricing. Today, though, the price of memory foam is comparable to ordinary mattresses. Expanded production capacity and modern manufacturing techniques have led to dramatically lower prices for memory foam.

Even those who have already made the mistake of buying a new conventional mattress can add a very affordable measure of memory foam comfort with a memory foam mattress topper in either one, two or four inch thicknesses. Even a memory foam pillow on a conventional mattress can help prevent it owner from waking up with a stiff neck day after day.

While sleeping on a cloud is the way to go if you live in a fairy tale, for the rest of us, a memory foam mattress with a memory foam pillow is the absolute best in comfort.
